North Korea has developed AI-driven suicide drones capable of autonomously identifying and striking South Korean and U.S. military assets. South Korean lawmaker Rep. Yu Yong-weon of the ruling People Power Party stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw recent tests of these advanced drones.
AI-Driven Drone Attacks
North Korean state media reported that the drones successfully struck targets resembling South Korea’s Long-range Surface-to-Air Missile system and the U.S. Stryker armored fighting vehicle. These drones are believed to use trained AI data to autonomously identify and attack military equipment.
Compared to a similar test last November, where drones targeted a passenger car, the recent test marks a significant advancement in attack capabilities.
Expanding Drone Arsenal
A quadcopter drone was also seen dropping a bomb onto a target for the first time, indicating North Korea’s efforts to diversify its drone warfare tactics. Analysts suggest the country is drawing from global conflicts, including the Ukraine war, to enhance its military technology.
“North Korea is adapting military technology from China and Russia while modernizing its combat strategies,” Yu stated.
Growing Military Threat
Reports suggest North Korea has deployed thousands of troops to aid Russia in Ukraine, gaining real combat experience that is likely fueling its technological advancements.
The emergence of AI-powered drones signals an evolving military strategy, increasing security concerns in the region as South Korea and its allies prepare to counter these threats.
