UTA Launches New Drone Course for Fall 2024

This fall, the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) introduces a new course, “Drones and Advanced Construction Technology,” aimed at helping students gain commercial drone operation licenses. This technical elective is available exclusively to senior civil and architectural engineering students, with CE 3311 Construction Engineering as the prerequisite.

The course prepares students for the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) remote pilot licensing exam, scheduled after the final lecture. Those who do not pass the licensing test will take a separate final exam created by the professor.

Course Benefits and Industry Relevance

Zhe Yin, the course instructor and assistant professor of instruction in civil engineering, emphasizes that the course equips students with highly sought-after skills in the industry. Licensed drone operators offer a safer alternative to climbing buildings for inspections and assist in creating 3D models of structures, streamlining engineers’ workloads.

Yin highlights the competitive edge students gain in the job market by obtaining the license, as companies prefer hiring in-house operators over third-party services.

Course Structure and Enrollment

The course quickly filled its 20 seats within five days of being listed on MyMav in August. The limited seating ensures safety and provides ample flying time for each student. With 20 students per semester, excluding summer, approximately 40 of the annual 150 graduates will leave with the license, enhancing their job prospects.

Students are divided into four groups of five to maximize efficiency. During class, two groups fly drones under supervision while the other two remain in the classroom. This rotation ensures all students get hands-on experience.

Unique Offering in Texas

UTA is one of only two universities in Texas offering an FAA drone course, and the only one focusing on civil engineering construction applications. Yin underwent an extensive application process with the FAA, and the course was approved by the provost during the summer.

Yin is proud of the effort put into making the course a reality, ensuring it meets industry standards and provides valuable skills to students.
