In a groundbreaking initiative, Skyports Drone Services, in collaboration with Makutu and Northumbrian Water, has successfully conducted test flights that could transform the way water companies monitor and enhance water quality.
Automating Water Quality Surveys with Drones
The pilot study showcased the use of beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) electric drone operations to automate water quality surveys. This innovative approach promises to improve access to remote areas, significantly reduce carbon emissions, and enable the collection of comprehensive data across vast regions, delivering results with unprecedented speed.
A Sustainable Alternative to Manual Data Collection
The new service aims to replace the traditional, labor-intensive methods of data collection, which involve manual water sample gathering and laboratory testing. Alex Brown, director of Skyports Drone Services, emphasized the importance of water quality in the UK and the substantial benefits that their solution offers to the environment, field personnel, and local communities.
The Speedbird Aero Aircraft: A Game-Changer in Water Testing
Utilizing the Speedbird Aero aircraft equipped with advanced winch technology, Skyports Drone Services can transport Makutu’s water sensor technology directly to testing sites. The winch system allows for the precise collection of water samples, with data transmitted back to Northumbrian Water almost instantly for analysis.
Efficient and Automated Data Collection
The Speedbird Aero’s high level of automation means it does not require a return to base between tests. It can efficiently gather data from multiple locations in a single journey, all on a single battery charge.
Next Steps: Scaling Operations and Remote BVLOS Sample Collections
After successful proof-of-concept flights in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Bishop Auckland, and Blyth, the next phase will expand operations. Skyports Drone Services plans to implement remotely operated BVLOS sample collections, further streamlining the process.
Northumbrian Water: Pioneering Clean Water Initiatives
Richard Warneford, Wastewater director at Northumbrian Water, expressed pride in the project’s success and its role in their extensive water quality monitoring program. The upcoming official rollout across the North East is a significant stride toward achieving the cleanest rivers and beaches in the country.
